The City of Bellefontaine is proud to have been designated as a "Tree City U.S.A." for the last 37 consecutive years.
To be recognized as "Tree City U.S.A." the City of Bellefontaine must make an application to the National Arbor Day Foundation demonstrating that the City meets the following four, core standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation:
To be recognized as "Tree City U.S.A." the City of Bellefontaine must make an application to the National Arbor Day Foundation demonstrating that the City meets the following four, core standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation:
- The City must have a tree board or department. The City of Bellefontaine Shade Tree Commission fulfills this criteria.
- The City must have established tree care ordinances. The ordinances found in Chapter 907 of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Bellefontaine meet this standard.
- The City must have a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita. Last year, the City of Bellefontaine spent $3.52 per capita through various efforts to enhance and improve trees within the community.
- The City must have an Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation. The City of Bellefontaine generally observes Arbor Day in close proximity to the observance of National Arbor Day, as proclaimed by the Mayor each year.
