⚠️ City of Bellefontaine – Sidewalk Safety Call to Action ⚠️

This is not a reminder — this is a call to action.

Many sidewalks throughout our city remain covered with snow and ice, creating unsafe conditions for students walking to school and bus stops, as well as for other residents who rely on them each day. Property owners and residents are responsible for clearing the sidewalks adjacent to their property.

City Ordinance Requirements:

1406.04 SIDEWALKS AND DRIVEWAYS
All sidewalks, walkways, stairs, driveways, parking spaces, and similar areas shall be kept in a proper state of repair and maintained free from hazardous conditions.

1406.05 REMOVAL OF SNOW AND ICE FROM SIDEWALKS
Property owners, occupants, or persons having care of property abutting a sidewalk are required to remove snow within the first four hours after daylight following a snowfall. When sidewalks are covered with ice, they must be made safe and passable by removing the ice or applying sand, salt, or other suitable substances.

Please take action today and clear your sidewalks.

If you have already done so, thank you. If you know a neighbor who may need assistance, please consider lending a hand. A few minutes of your time can make a significant difference in ensuring our children and community members can travel safely.

Let’s work together to keep Bellefontaine safe and accessible for everyone!

The storm has passed and temperatures are now above zero. We kindly remind all residents that it is the responsibility of the owner, occupant, or any person having the care of a building abutting a sidewalk to remove snow and ice from that sidewalk. (City Ordinances 1406.04 and 1406.05)

Accessible sidewalks are essential for the safety of everyone in our community, including students, pedestrians, and individuals who rely on safe walkways to reach their destinations. Your prompt attention helps ensure that everyone can travel safely.

A red snow shovel clearing a snow-covered sidewalk. Text above reads, "Help keep our community safe!" urging people to clear snow for pedestrians.
The City of Bellefontaine has received multiple complaints and concerns regarding streets not being adequately plowed following recent snowfall. One of the primary issues affecting snow removal is vehicles parked on city streets for extended periods of time, which prevents snow plows from fully clearing the roadway.

Residents who have vehicles parked on the street and who have access to alternative off-street parking, such as driveways, are asked to please use those options so the Street Department can safely and effectively clear the streets.

Please be reminded that City Ordinance 351.15 prohibits vehicles from being parked on a city street for longer than 72 hours, and City Ordinance 303.09 prohibits leaving junk or unlicensed vehicles on public or private property. Some vehicles currently parked on city streets have not been moved since before the snowfall that occurred last Sunday. These vehicles are subject to parking violations. If a vehicle meets the definition of a junk vehicle while parked on a city street, it is subject to tow.

Help us help you by moving vehicles off the street whenever possible.
Thank you for your cooperation.

With very cold temperatures in the forecast, now is the time to protect your home’s plumbing. Frozen pipes can burst and cause costly damage. Here are simple steps you can take to prevent problems: Let faucets drip: A small, steady drip (especially from faucets on exterior walls) keeps water moving and helps prevent freezing. Open cabinet doors: If you have sinks on outside walls, open the cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. Keep your thermostat consistent: Do not lower your heat at night. Keep your home at at least 55°F, even if you’re away. Seal drafts: Cold air coming in through gaps near pipes can cause freezing. Use towels or insulation to block drafts around windows, doors, and foundation vents. Disconnect garden hoses: Remove hoses from outdoor spigots and shut off interior valves if you have them. Know the signs of a freeze: Low or no water flow could mean a frozen pipe. If this happens, contact a plumber. If a pipe bursts, shut off your home’s main water valve immediately. Taking these steps now can help you avoid major issues later.

A huge THANK YOU to our Street Department crews who have been working around the clock to clean up what Mother Nature left behind. Snow days don’t mean days off for this team!

Today, crews were hard at work clearing piles of snow throughout downtown Bellefontaine to keep streets safe and accessible for residents, businesses, and visitors. Early mornings, cold temps, and heavy equipment are all part of the job—and they tackle it with dedication and grit so the rest of us can get where we need to go safely.

We truly appreciate your long hours, commitment, and hard work—no matter the weather! 👏❄️
