Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Sister City Friendship Pact between the City of Bellefontaine and Suzuka, Japan.
On August 7, 1991, then-Mayor Richard Vicario signed this historic friendship pact, creating a lasting relationship built on mutual respect, cultural exchange, and international connection. For 35 years, this friendship has continued to bring our communities together through shared experiences, learning, and meaningful connections.
This year, we were honored to welcome our friends from Suzuka to Bellefontaine. During their visit, they shared a fun and engaging presentation that gave us a glimpse into everyday life in Japan. We learned about the many sounds that are part of daily life in Japan, including emergency vehicles, public announcements, and even the unique melodies heard in everyday settings.
Our guests also introduced us to the fascinating world of Japanese vending machines. With more than 4 million vending machines across Japan, they offer much more than drinks and snacks. We learned about the incredible variety available, including ready-to-eat meals, hot pot ingredient sets, frozen fish, charms, Pokémon cards, live fishing bait, and so much more.
While sharing their culture with us, our friends from Suzuka were also excited to experience everyday life in Bellefontaine. One of the things they were most looking forward to was visiting our stores and seeing how we shop in the United States. They also shared their excitement about trying some of our favorite foods, including burgers, steaks, and barbecue.
As a special way to commemorate this milestone, Mayor Crissman had challenge coins created for our friends from Suzuka to take back to Japan in honor of the 35th anniversary of our Sister City partnership. These coins serve as a lasting reminder of the friendship, respect, and connections shared between our two communities.
The presentation and visit were a fun and memorable way to learn about Japanese culture while getting to know the students who joined us for their short stay here in the United States. Experiences like these are what make our Sister City relationship so special.
As we celebrate 35 years of friendship between Bellefontaine and Suzuka, we are grateful for the connections made, the cultures shared, and the memories created. We look forward to many more years of friendship, collaboration, and continued exchange between our communities.
Happy 35th Anniversary to our Sister City partnership!
