64th ANNUAL EXCHANGE CLUB SAFETY TOWN PROGRAM The Bellefontaine Exchange Club has announced plans to sponsor their 64th Annual Safety Town Program. The first was held in 1962 at the request of a parent whose son was killed while crossing the street. Tim Notestine, Safety Town Chairman, and graduate of that first Safety Town, reminds us that Safety Town provides instruction to pre-school aged children. The program includes pedestrian safety, traffic signals and signs, fire safety, good and bad touching, not getting in cars with strangers and the hazards of drugs among other things. Instructors are trained officers from the Bellefontaine Police Department and Logan County Sheriff’s Office along with occasional assistance from Township Officers and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The instructors use films, lectures, coloring books, traffic signs and signals, along with stressing vehicle and bus safety during their time with the students. All classroom sessions will be held at Bellefontaine Elementary School located at 1101 Ludlow Rd. Classes last approximately two hours and are held Monday through Friday with both 9:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. sessions available. Parents may attend sessions with their children as needed or desired and should inform the instructor of their intent when signing in their child each day. This year the Safety Town Program will be held on the following weeks: June 2, 2025, June 9,2025, June 16, 2025, and June23, 2025 (No sessions will be held 6/19 due to the Federal Holidays.) (Additional week will be added if needed) The program is open to children who will be entering kindergarten in the Fall 25-26 school year and each child is welcome to attend this free Safety Program. We have partnered with the Bellefontaine Parks Department to make registering your child for Safety Town more convenient. Simply go to www.BellefontaineParks.com to sign your child/children up. If you have previously set up an account on the website you do NOT need to set up a new account, use your existing account (you may call the Parks office at (937) 592-3475 for assistance with passwords). By signing up on the Parks website, you will be able to register for the session of your choice. The classes are available for all Logan County pre-kindergarten students. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Parks office at parks@ci.bellefontaine.oh.us or (937)592-3475.

This morning, at 5:46 am, crews were dispatched to 706 W. Sandusky Ave. (RD Holder Oil Co.) for a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found that a fuel delivery truck had caught fire inside the shop area of the building. The fire was contained to the truck, but heat and smoke damage extended to the light fixtures and roof of the building. A huge "Thank you" to BPD Ofc. Bryce Goodrich. Officer Goodrich was at the pumps, refueling his cruiser, when he noticed an orange glow, through the door, and smoke coming from the eaves. Officer Goodrich called the fire in and ensured that the lone occupant got out safely. No injuries were reported.

Today, at 11:55am, B-Shift was dispatched to 215 Powell Ave. for a house fire. Upon arrival, crews found a fire in an upper level bathroom and recalled off duty personnel. Within 4 minutes, the fire had been knocked down and overhaul was initiated. Extension was noted in the ceiling, but was quickly dealt with. An engine and medic unit, from Huntsville Fire Dept. provided mutual aid and completed salvage and overhaul. All occupants escaped without injury. We'd like to take this time to remind everyone to never use extension cords with space heaters, establish and practice a home fire escape plan, always know at least two ways out, establish a meeting place outside and at a safe distance from your house, and to have a minimum of one working smoke alarm on each level of your home.
