Colin Deitsch was officially sworn in this afternoon as the City’s newest police officer during a ceremony marked by a large show of support from family, friends, and community members. Parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, and friends from college were all present to celebrate the occasion.
During the ceremony, the mayor shared that he always enjoys participating in the swearing-in of police officers and firefighters. As a former firefighter, he noted that these moments are especially meaningful to him and serve as a reminder of the importance of public service.
Deitsch will begin the State Patrol Academy in 10 days and expressed excitement as he prepares for the next step in his career. While acknowledging that the academy will be challenging, he said he feels motivated and ready to begin the training process.
When asked why he chose a career in law enforcement, Deitsch said his goal is simply to make a difference. He spoke about the importance of spreading kindness, being involved in the community, and helping change the public’s perception of law enforcement through positive interactions and by doing the job the right way.
He also described the hiring process as long and rigorous, explaining that it is designed to ensure candidates possess the character and qualities necessary to serve effectively as law enforcement officers. While demanding, he said the process is essential to finding the right fit.
Once training is complete, Deitsch said he looks forward to building strong relationships within the community. He currently works at a local pharmacy, where he interacts with residents daily, and believes law enforcement will allow him to further strengthen those connections. He added that his familiarity with some department personnel from growing up around law enforcement has made the transition feel especially welcoming.
For those considering a career in law enforcement, Deitsch encouraged preparation and self-reflection before beginning the process. He emphasized the importance of maintaining an open mind, strong character, and confidence in the decision to pursue the profession.
Outside of his professional goals, Deitsch shared that he played college football and is an avid sports fan.
As he prepares to enter the academy, Deitsch does so with strong community support and a commitment to serving with professionalism, integrity, and kindness.
